On March 19, 2025, the Santa Maria Water District (SMWD), in coordination with the Bureau of Fire Protection – Santa Maria Fire Station (BFP – SMFS), conducted a 2-hour Fire Drill Seminar. This seminar was a similar session held in the same month last year for SMWD employees. Those who were unable to attend the seminar last year took part in this year’s session. A total of 62 participants attended the drill.

The resource speakers for the seminar were Fire Officers (FO) 1 Manny Rex Santos and Ronen Cantor from the BFP – SMFS. The seminar began with a lecture discussion at the SMWD Board Room at 9 AM. During the session, the fire officers covered a range of important fire safety topics, including the causes and classes of fire, types of fire extinguishers and how to use them, and key fire safety reminders.

Midway through the seminar, Engr. Carlos N. Santos Jr., the General Manager, acknowledged the BFP and their resource speakers. He also delivered a persuasive and influential message emphasizing the importance of such training for all employees. He also explained that the seminar was important in helping employees understand the proper actions to take in the event of a fire.

After the lecture, the participants moved outside the building for a practical fire drill. The fire officers demonstrated how to properly use a fire extinguisher to put out a fire, and some employees had the opportunity to try using the extinguishers themselves.

The Santa Maria Water District and the Bureau of Fire Protection have long been partners, with SMWD providing water to the BFP, especially during times of calamities. This training program is particularly beneficial during Fire Prevention Month. It has improved employees’ knowledge of fire safety protocols and ensured that everyone is ready to respond efficiently when needed.
