The Santa Maria Water District (SMWD) recently made significant efforts to create a more supportive and inclusive work environment by organizing a unity and mental wellness activity. Led by the Gender and Development Focal Point System (GFPS), this initiative focused on boosting the mental strength and overall well-being of all SMWD employees, ensuring a healthy and productive workforce.
In preparation for the event, the GFPS had well-outlined, planned, and arranged this activity for the benefit of every employee. Furthermore, to properly assess the mental well-being of all employees, the organization conducted evaluations through a series of questions administered a week before the program.
The activity took place at the Clearwater Resort and Country Club in Pampanga from June 21 to 22, 2024. A total of 173 participants, including the general manager and the board of directors, were divided into nine groups equally. The event began at 9 a.m. in the Discovery Hall with a video lecture discussing mental health issues and coping strategies. The program was hosted by Josua Samonte and Engr. Angelo Reyes. The first activity, the Cheers and Yells Competition, allowed each group to showcase their skills through singing and dancing, with diverse representations making the presentations more significant. Following this, the Tower Building Activity started, where groups were given only tape and pieces of newspaper to build the tallest and strongest tower. This activity aimed not just to build the highest tower but mainly to build a connection between the members. At the end, each group then designated a representative to discuss their towers, presenting with confidence and purpose.
In the afternoon, the main event, the “SMWD Amazing Race,” began at 2:30 PM. All groups gathered in the Discovery Hall for a briefing on the race sections. This activity aimed to build rapport, coordination, and teamwork, enabling participants to strategize and work together to win the games as one.
Despite various obstacles, all groups reached the finish line, with the green team, which started last, emerging as the winner. This outcome highlighted that success can also be determined by how you finish, not how you start.
Later that evening, the SMWD Social Night took place, featuring employees dressed in white, brown, and nude styles. The event provided a platform for employees to showcase their fashion sense, with some selected to model and represent their groups. Before the party began, an awarding ceremony commenced courtesy of the GAD Members, the General Manager, and the Board of Directors.
Moreover, the social gathering allowed employees to get to know and befriend colleagues they do not usually interact with during work, creating new friendships and a positive atmosphere. On the following day, all of them were given the full opportunity to tour around, relax, and explore the venue. Indeed, this program was able to strengthen relationships among all SMWD employees and instill the importance of teamwork in achieving Santa Maria Water District’s organizational goals. Additionally, it paved the way to create a harmonious working environment, promote healthy well-being, and foster a culture of work-life balance.
Overall, the program successfully strengthened relationships among SMWD employees and emphasized the importance of teamwork in achieving the Santa Maria Water District’s organizational goals. It also highlighted the importance of developing the mental fortitude of every SMWD employee, regardless of gender, race, or culture. The event not only strengthened connections but also accentuated the importance of mental health and inclusivity in the workplace. As the participants returned to their daily routines, they carried with them a renewed sense of camaraderie and a deeper understanding of the value of a supportive work environment.
